COTTON

Cotton plays a vital role in the Indian economy.
India has brought about a qualitative and quantitative transformation in the production of
cotton since Independance. India produces the widest range of cottons capable of spinning
from 6s to 120s counts.
Andhra Pradesh is one of the major produce of cotton in India. The crop is extensively
grown in the districts of Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy,
Kurnool, Cuddapah, Anantapur, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam.
Variety:

The quality of cotton is of four types:
1. Extra long staple cotton (34.5 mm & above)
2. Long staple (28 mm to 34 mm )
3. Medium staple (24.5 mm to 27.5 mm )
4. Short staple (24.5 mm & below)
Procurement of cotton by Markfed:
Markfed established cotton ginning and pressing unit at Adilabad with 48 Nos. of D.R. gins
and a press. Markfed is undertaking procurement from cotton growing districts. The cotton
procured in and around Adilabad is being processed in Markfed's own ginning and pressing
unit and the cotton procured at other places is being processed by engaging the ginning
and pressing units on hire basis.
The government of India is alloting an export quota to Markfed alongwith other State
Federations every year. The year wise export performance of AP Markfed against the export
quota alloted are furnished below:
